Surf Life Saving is Australia’s major water safety and rescue authority that has been saving lives on our beaches for over 100 years. It is one of Australia’s largest volunteer organisations with a membership of 153,626 and a team of 43,836 who regularly volunteer their time to patrol our beaches. The economic and social value of Surf Life Saving in Australia has been estimated at more than $1.4 billion each year.
Surf Life Saving is committed to doing whatever it takes to prevent drowning and injury around the Australian coastline. In 2010 Surf Lifesavers rescued 11,912 people. It is estimated that without Surf Life Saving 500 of these people would have drowned.
Sadly there were still 82 drowning deaths in 2010. To reverse this it is important that Surf Life Saving has secure and stable funding. As a result the Balnaves Foundation has donated $500,000 to the Surf Life Saving Rescue Trust Fund, an endowment fund managed by the Surf Life Saving Foundation to provide a more assured and ongoing source of funding for vital programs and equipment.
Neil has been a board member of the Surf Life Saving Foundation since 2010.
