Jawun is an innovative not-for-profit organisation that places skilled people from Australia’s leading companies and government agencies into Indigenous organisations across Australia. These secondees support Indigenous organisations and leaders to achieve their own development goals.
In 2015 the Balnaves Foundation committed to three years of funding to support Jawun’s operations in Redfern and La Perouse in Sydney. This support will enable the placement of 45 corporate and government secondees per annum into 10 Indigenous organisations across Sydney, including the Aboriginal Housing Company, La Perouse Local Aboriginal Land Council and Tranby Aboriginal College.
Despite decades of effort, Indigenous people in Redfern and La Perouse still face significant social and economic challenges, particularly around education and employment outcomes. Indigenous organisations in the area are working hard to embed the following social norms for their communities: children attend school every day and have access to quality education; capable adults participate in training or work; housing is affordable and safe; communities are safe, capable and supportive. The Jawun secondment program provides critical support to key organisations in the region to achieve these aims.
