In 1989 Bond University welcomed its first students to its brand new, state-of-the-art campus on Queensland’s Gold Coast. The vision of Bond University is to be a leading private and independent university of world standing. Its mission is to produce uniquely identifiable graduates who are leaders and thinkers, imbued with initiative, the spirit of free enterprise and a continuing quest for intellectual inquiry, challenge and opportunity.
The Balnaves Foundation donated $1.5 million towards the cost of a new state-of-the-art Multimedia Learning Centre which opened in 2008. The centre provides a technologically rich space where students can study in groups or individually. The centre incorporates a laptop bar, study booths, digital art displays and includes a Collaborative Learning Room with latest technology including a Smartboard, HD projector, video conferencing. The Australian Institute of Architects awarded the Multimedia Learning Centre the G.H.M Addison Award for Interior Architecture.
In recognition of the donation, the University named the new centre The Balnaves Foundation Multimedia Learning Centre. The Foundation has also made an ongoing financial commitment to upgrade the technology to ensure the centre remains at the cutting-edge.
Neil Balnaves served a six year term as a Councillor of the University and continues to serve as a Trustee. His substantial commitment to the university was recognised in 2009 when he was awarded with an Honorary Doctorate.
