Art Gallery of South Australia

START at the Gallery is a program designed specifically for children and families at the Art Gallery of South Australia, made possible by the support of the Balnaves Foundation.
START aims to introduce young children to art for the first time and set the groundwork for a life-long love of the arts. The program’s focus is on making the experience of visiting the art gallery accessible, enjoyable and educational. Art Gallery Director Christopher Menz said “We want to engage with young people and with START at the Gallery we hope to create a new breed of art lovers which is critical to the future success of the Gallery,” said Menz.
START is held on the first Sunday of every month and offers free fun and cultural activities for children aged 5-12 years. START at the Gallery aims to encourage great appreciation and knowledge of the visual arts and the state’s magnificent collection. Families are invited to enjoy shared learning opportunities encouraged by our passionate and expert guides and tutors through participation in art and craft activities, performances, live music and special children’s Eye Spy tours.
