Art Gallery of NSW

The Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW) is a leading museum of art, and one of Australia's foremost cultural institutions. It holds significant collections of Australian, European and Asian art, and presents nearly forty exhibitions annually.
Neil Balnaves has been a benefactor to the AGNSW for many years. In 2003 he committed $300,000 to launch a five-year programme of exhibitions and acquisitions to present contemporary and historical sculpture by Australian and international artists. The annual events enabled the Art Gallery of New South Wales to explore in depth the latest directions in sculpture and present a range of mid and large scale exhibitions that both the artists’ and audiences would benefit from. It included artists such as Robert Owen, James Angus, Wolfgang Laib and the first major retrospective exhibition of Bertram Mackennal’s work.
The Balnaves Foundation has again partnered with AGNSW to present a biennial project named ‘Balnaves Contemporary’. There are three exhibitions in the series, which are planned for 2010, 2012 and 2014. The first, which opened in mid 2010, focussed on painting and exhibited the work of young and mid-career Australian painters.
